Abstract
In order to determine the reaction of six sainfoin species to drought stress, a green house experiment was conducted in randomized complete block design as factorial with four replications in 2002. Experimental treatments included six sainfoin species (O. viciaefolia, O. aucheri ssp. Psamophilla, O. melanotricha, O. aucheri ssp. Teheranica, O. crissta galli and O. sojakii) and four levels of water stress (25%, 50%, 75% and 100 % FC). The studying traits included root and shoot length, the ratio of root to shoo, and the dry weight of root and shoot. The results showed that the effect of water stress was significant on all traits in experiments. There were significant differrences between species, as the highest tolerance was obtained in O. sojakii and O. melanotricha. In general, it was founded that the O. aucheri ssp. psamophilla species and O. crissta galli  were  the most sensitive to the water stress.
