[English]
Extended abstract Introduction In recent years, due to the problems caused by human interference in the Salmas plain, including the increase in the unreasonable use of surface water resources, the increase in groundwater withdrawal, and the change in land use has caused pressure on the groundwater resources of the region. Hence, land subsidence is at least a natural response to the decrease in groundwater level. Therefore, it is important to study and identify subsidence areas in the region.
Research materials and methods The data used in this research include groundwater information and Sentinel 1 radar images. The groundwater information received from the regional water company of West Azarbaijan province. In the present research, the DInSAR algorithm has been used to measure surface displacement. Further, by using the DInSAR and Sentinel 1 images, subsidence was identified in Salmas plain from October 2014 to October 2019. The validation of the radar interferometry method was done using the data from Qareqeshlaq geodynamic station, groundwater level changes, and field observations.
Results and Discussion By examining the changes in the groundwater of the Salmas Plain, most of them show a decreasing trend. The wells in the central and southeastern regions with high thickness of the alluvium have the highest amount of water loss. Mehlam, West Tazeshahr, and Ian wells, which are in the western part of the plain and close to the dam lake, respectively, Checking the subsidence maps of the Salmas plain showed that most of the subsidence is concentrated in the southern areas, especially the southeast of the plain, in comparison with other parts of the plain. This trend of subsidence continued from 2014 to 2019 and this trend is also prevalent in the final map. The average water level changes in the Salmas plain aquifer shows a downward trend in the mentioned period, which is consistent with the subsidence of the land. By examining the map of the groundwater drop, it shows that the areas with the highest drop are in perfect agreement with the subsidence areas. A higher drop of water indicates a higher harvest, which has been affected by subsidence due to water discharge in the area.
Conclusion and suggestions Average displacement rate due to subsidence in the region is 5 cm, which can be fully verified in terms of observations of changes in the groundwater level. The piezometric data shows the reduction of water level in most of the wells compared to the past, which depicts the occurrence of excessive extraction of groundwater. It is suggested that by informing the people, they should be aware of the consequences of excessive harvesting and recommend alternative crops with low annual water demand and early yield.
