Abstract | ||
Considering the importance of the adrenal gland and the lack of the information about its structure in the Persian squirrel, this study aimed to generate and expand the knowledge of the physiology of the adrenal gland to help diagnose and the treatment of diseases related to it. Five adult male Persian squirrel which were used for this study. The colored latex was utilized for evaluation of blood supplying and PAS, Masons trichrome, and H&E staining methods were applied for histochemical and stereological investigations. The right and left adrenal glands were under the 10th and 11th thoracic vertebra, respectively, The size and shape of the two glands were different. Blood supply was performed by the adrenal artery, which was separated from the aorta. Glands had specific cortical and medullary layers similar to other mammals. A very large central vein was in the medulla. Collagen accumulation was seen between zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata and zona reticularis and medullary layer. The medulla was PAS negative and the zona reticularis had the highest reaction to PAS. More than 77% of the left adrenal gland and more than 80% of the right adrenal gland consist of the cortex layer, and the total thickness of the right adrenal gland is 1.9 times that of the left adrenal gland. The structure of the adrenal glands of the Persian squirrel has differences and similarities with other rodents, The information of this research can be useful in the diagnosis and surgery of these glands in the Persian squirrel. | ||
